Inspired by the mountains of the Great Karoo
I started sculpting her, this wild and windswept girl, during the time of our strictest lockdown.
I would open all the studio windows and let the fierce Karoo mountain top winds race through…
Isolated and quiet I would sit with the sculptures and try to listen, smell, feel the stories of the places that the wind had touched - and could now tell me.
Remind me of outside.
Remind outside about me.
So I sculpted the feeling of that wild, free wind - hair and dress being pushed, pulled and pressed as it played.
As she comes into her own, emerging from the fire of the casting process, ‘Mountiangirl’ is the freedom of the winged winds’ fingerprints, set in glowing bronze’
